GR to Build 7 Roundabouts Calming Neighborhood Traffic

Seven roundabouts are being built across Grand Rapids and Kent County to address speeding and improve safety. Construction starts late July 2026 and is expected to finish by October. The projects aim to reduce crashes at intersections like Coit/Guild, where residents had petitioned for changes.
Grand Rapids is tackling traffic safety head-on with seven new roundabouts set to calm neighborhood streets. The City of Grand Rapids and Kent County Road Commission announced the projects in response to resident concerns about speeding and crashes. Work begins in late July 2026 and is slated for completion by October.
The initiative includes six small roundabouts at key intersections: Giddings/Sigsbee, Coit/Guild, Trowbridge/Coit, Auburn/Fountain, Calvin/Noble, and Prospect/Crescent. Additionally, a larger regional roundabout will address the busy junction at 10 Mile Road and Myers Lake Avenue. Transportation engineer John Bartlett and Kent County Road Commission managing director Jerry Byrne are overseeing the construction.

These changes aim to reduce crashes and improve safety for all road users. For instance, the Coit/Guild roundabout was prompted by resident petitions after multiple severe crashes. While residents should expect temporary traffic disruptions through the fall, the long-term benefit is a safer community for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
