After two years of build-out, Barkeep Brewing opens Saturday on Wealthy Street with a focus on lager and a back patio that seats 80.

TL;DR — 20-second summary

Barkeep Brewing opens Saturday at 1420 Wealthy St SE, bringing the first production brewery to Eastown's dining corridor. The 4,000-square-foot space features a 20-tap bar focused on European-style lagers and a back patio that seats 80. Owners Marta and Dom Szymanski funded the build-out through a combination of SBA loans and a $120,000 community crowdfund.

Eastown's Wealthy Street corridor has hosted restaurants, coffee shops, and wine bars for decades — but never a production brewery. That changes Saturday when Barkeep Brewing opens at 1420 Wealthy St SE, fulfilling a two-year build-out that turned a former auto-parts warehouse into a 4,000-square-foot taproom with an 80-seat back patio.

Owners Marta and Dom Szymanski, who met while working at Founders Brewing ten years ago, raised $120,000 through a community equity crowdfund in addition to SBA financing. More than 300 Eastown residents became small shareholders in the process — a fact the couple says shaped their decision to focus on approachable, sessionable lagers rather than the double IPAs that dominate local tap lists.

The opening lineup includes a Czech-style pilsner, a Munich dunkel, a Vienna lager, and a rotating seasonal. The kitchen serves elevated bar snacks — think smash burgers, duck-fat fries, and Michigan cheese plates — from a menu developed with chef Tanya Okonkwo, formerly of Butcher's Union. Saturday's grand opening runs noon to midnight with live music from local acts starting at 4 p.m.
